Primorsk is an amazing city. With a permanent population of 13 thousand people, this settlement claims the status of New Odessa or modern Babylon. Historically it so happened that here came and forever remained representatives of different peoples. Polovtsians, Greeks, Nogais, Jews, Bulgarians, Armenian-Gregorians, Russians and Ukrainians, enchanted by the beauty of the Zaporozhian steppe, in different historical periods became residents of the city, now called Primorsky. In memory of the land that gave the possibility of existence, the festival «We are Ukrainian» appeared on the territory of the poly-ethno-polis.
This event is young. It began to be held in the year when the 150th anniversary of the immigration of Bulgarians to the Azov region was celebrated. The first Bulgarians from Bessarabia in the city of Nogaysk appeared in 1861. Accordingly, in 2011 the first festival «We are Ukrainian» was organized, which hosted guests, participants and spectators in the former Nogaysk and the current town of Primorsk.
The meaning of the festival is a demonstration of the arts of national cultures that live on the territory of the Azov region. Local collectives and those that came from the historical homelands of the current citizens of Ukraine participate. The program includes competition of vocalists, dancers and artists of original genre. In addition, the festival includes a forum. It is dedicated to national traditions as guardians of public morality.
Only here, in the Azov region, a tourist can see ethnic fireworks, created by the efforts of representatives of 40 nationalities. Girls and boys from the Greek society dance sertaki. Bulgarians in folk costumes dance «krenikovtsy». Descendants of Nogai demonstrate the art of handling cold weapons. One can hear the chime of the Russian brand «Kalinka-malinka» and «Hava Nagila» sounds powerfully, rolling across the steppe. Each festival opens with a parade of people in national costumes and ends with a gala concert, where the best groups that came to «We are Ukrainian» perform.
