The gloomy but alluring, dilapidated but preserving the romanticism of the Middle Ages Chinadievo Castle is another local attraction, famous far beyond Chinadievo. It is a priceless monument of medieval architecture, which has survived to our time from the depths of centuries. For lovers of ancient buildings, as well as for those who are eager for a colorful experience, there is no more interesting place in Chinadievo.
The ancient building, which primarily had a defensive function, is called a palace, a castle and St. Miklos Fortress in honor of the former name of the village. Its construction began in the mid-14th century under Baron Pereni and was completed at the end of the same century. Thus, today the Chinadieu Fortress is more than 600 years old!
Baron Pereni’s idea of building a fortress was prompted by the need for reliable defense against invaders and nomads, who often visited the Chinadievo Dominy. It was this protective function that was eventually reflected in the architecture of the castle — the main goal of the construction was to create an impregnable building that would shelter the local population from the «dagger that never dried up from blood» of the harsh times of the Middle Ages.
In shape, the two-storey Chinadievskaya fortress resembles a broad letter «P», its massive walls are more than one meter thick. Numerous windows under the roof all around the perimeter of the building and two corner three-story towers emphasize the defensive nature of the structure. The unknown architect who built the castle emphasized not on the decor, but on the reliability and impregnability of the building. 
Additional protection was provided by earth ramparts, hedges and ditches, which have not survived to this day, as well as the magnificent garden surrounding the castle, which was laid out under Ferenc Bashinda in 1749.
One of the brightest chapters in the history of the castle was the years of the anti-Habsburg war (1703-1711), when Ferenc Rakoczy, the Hungarian fighter for independence, took refuge within its walls. Then, despite its impregnability, in the middle of the 17th century the fortress was taken by Prince Lubomirski and seriously damaged. In 1734, the first serious restoration of the Csinádio Fortress was carried out, and after the restoration works of 1839 under the direction of the architect Hermann Ignáci, it acquired a modern appearance and features typical of Romanesque defense structures.
Every ancient castle has its mysterious stories and legends, and the Chinadian Fortress of St. Miklos is no exception. The main mystery was a walled-in skeleton discovered during the restoration of 1839 — who fell victim to such a terrible fate is still unknown. However, despite this blood-chilling story, the atmosphere within the walls of the ancient fortress has been described only positively because of the famous love story.
It was here, at the end of the XVII century, that the love of Ilona Zrini, a Mukachevo princess, and Imre Tekeli, a rebel leader, was born. In the walls of the fortress the lovers took refuge from the hostile outside world and it seems that the pieces of that love and joy they felt have been preserved in the Chinadievsky St. Miklos Castle to this day. This legend is confirmed by the numerous love stories that began within the walls of the building. 
One such story gave birth to a new stage in the history of the castle, which had been abandoned since the 1980s. Having met in the Chinadievsky fortress, now Bartoszy’s spouses decided to give thanks to the building by giving it a new life. Since 2002, the famous Transcarpathian artist Yosif Bartosh and his wife have been carrying out restoration works in the castle, restoring its interiors, conducting excursions and telling all the guests the details of its interesting fate.
Today, this ancient attraction of Ukraine has an art gallery where portraits of the former owners of the castle painted by J. Bartosz are exhibited, festivals, literary evenings and even wedding ceremonies are held. The first floor of the castle has been completely restored in accordance with the original interiors, and work is underway on the second floor, which, like the first floor, has 6 rooms and one large hall.
For any guest of Chinadievo a visit to the Chinadievo fortress is a unique opportunity to plunge into the Middle Ages, to see it as it was — on the one hand frightening and gloomy, on the other — romantic and mysterious.
