The Canalway was built from 1967 to 1987 in several phases. In the process of construction the project was changed, as it was decided not to destroy the picturesque rocks of Ai-Petri for the sake of it and completely adjust the project to the surrounding landscape. As a result, the brightest attraction appeared in Crimea, which has been working properly for more than 30 years and pleasing all the tourists who visited it.
The total length of the road from the station «Ai-Petri», located at an altitude of 1152m above sea level on the Ai-Petri yaila, to the station «Miskhor» — 2980m. Between these stations there is a middle one — «Sosnovy Bor» (height above sea level — 304m), where the passengers of the ropeway who descended or ascended to it transfer to another carriage. The length of the span between the upper station and «Sosnovy Bor» is 1670m, and it is noteworthy that there are no support towers between them — it is one of the longest unsupported spans in Europe! Only in Germany there is a cable car with a longer unsupported span — 1980m. From the middle station to Miskhora — another 1310m. The whole way passenger carriage, which can hold up to 40 people, makes only 15 minutes, but this seemingly small period of time becomes a lifetime for those who ride on the road for the first time.
The ropeway is especially impressive for those who, having got on it for the first time, make a descent from Ai-Petri to Miskhor: the huge height, stunning panoramas of the South Coast — all this is breathtaking! From the upper station the carriage goes down at an angle of 46 degrees, moving at a speed of 8 meters per second — for those who like extreme, this descent is a great opportunity to feel the adrenaline rush and tickle your nerves! However, everything is not so scary, and even people who are afraid of heights can bravely make such an exciting journey through the air. The road span from Ai-Petri to Pine Forest is the most impressive part of the route, and descending from the middle station to the lower one in Miskhora tourists enjoy the panoramas more quietly. This span is located above the pine forest of the Yalta Mountain Forest Reserve, revealing picturesque pictures.
You can spend a whole day riding on the cable car: first go up it from Miskhor to Ai-Petri, spend time there, and then go back down to Miskhor. Here, on one of the most beautiful peaks of Crimea, there is a whole tourist town with souvenir shops and market, restaurants and cafes and even a few hotels where you can stay and live literally in the clouds. For the first time tourists who came to Ai-Petri the clouds seem to be fog, but local residents are happy to surprise, telling that in fact they are clouds.
