The most important attraction of State Historical and Cultural Reserve «Khortitsa» is the Museum of the History of the Zaporozhian Cossacks, which was created on the basis of the Museum of the History of Zaporozhye, opened on the territory of the island in 1983. In the collections of the museum there are more than 30 thousand objects representing the historical period from the Neolithic to the 19th century. These items were found on the territory of Zaporozhye region, Khortytsia Island and the bottom of the Dnieper in the vicinity of the islands. A unique collection of Cossack weapons of XVII-XVIII centuries was presented to the museum by Zaporozhye philanthropist E. Chernyak. These are kettledrums, periach, sabers, pistol inlaid with silver and kleinose.
