Vozdvizhenskaya Church

Location: Ternopil, St. Nad Stav, 16

On the street Nad Stav, house 16, stands the oldest temple of the city of Ternopil, which was built under the crown hetman Tarnovsky.

The inscription above one of the portals indicates that in 1627 a three-story tower-bell tower was added to the western facade, which had a defense purpose.

The three-part sandstone structure is represented by a rectangular nave (an elongated room bounded by a row of columns or pillars), an equally wide and square vestibule with a nave, above which two tiers of tower and a semicircular apse (a ledge of the building covered with a half-dome or a closed half-vault) rise.

The nave is covered with a cross vault, the nave with a half-circular vault with decks, and the apse with a quarter-spherical vault. The semicircular apse is a significant difference of this monument from the cult defense buildings of that time, it corresponds to the traditions of Ancient Russia.

The structure was once part of the ring of defense structures of the city of Ternopil.
And after the restoration in 1959, the church received a new name «Church over the pond».
