Not many historical architectural sights of Rivne have survived to our times. Here we would like to tell you about one of them, the wooden Dormition Church, which is located on Shevchenko Street. It belongs to one of the oldest religious architectural buildings of Rivne.
The church was founded more than 250 years ago, in 1756. The funds for its construction were allocated by parishioners who lived on Omelyanskaya Street. Architecturally, the Church of the Assumption is single-domed, built of three equal-height log cabins with an octagonal middle part, which ends with a low lantern with a helmet-shaped cover. Its iconostasis was made in 1784.
Not far from the church there is a two-story bell tower. Together with the church, an interesting detail, the so-called «chain of moral foundations», which is a small chain, has survived until our time. According to historical materials, in the XVIII century, impious parishioners were chained to it so that they could publicly atone for their sins.
In the 60s of XX century on the site of the church authorities wanted to build a hostel, but thanks to the residents of the same street Omelyanska, now Shevchenko, the temple was not demolished and it continued to exist.
