The ski resort Bukovel, which is located near the village of Polyanitsa in the southwestern part of Ivano-Frankivsk region has become world famous in just over 10 years of its existence. Modern infrastructure, stunning slopes, nature of amazing beauty — all this allows you to rank Bukovel among the world’s best ski resorts without exaggeration, but there is another reason why you should come here in winter. In January there is an unusual, fun and very interesting event — the Festival of walruses.
Walrus Festival was first held in Polyanitsa in January 2007, since then it has become a good tradition — winter swimmers from all over the country and abroad now come here every year to gain health, strength, energy and positive emotions.
Festival of walruses in Bukovel takes place during the celebration of Epiphany — it is believed that at this time the water is filled with magical power, gives health, energy and willpower. Participants and spectators of the festival come from all over the world to see and participate in this amazing event. All fans of winter bathing are awarded with souvenirs and diplomas.

Within the Festival there are Festive Divine Service, consecration of water in the artificial mountain lake Bukovel, cultural and entertainment events. Among such events — performance of musicians of the Philharmonic of Ivano-Frankivsk region, ensembles and art collectives of Prikarpattya, as well as mass games, entertainment, festivities around the campfire, tastings of national dishes and much more.
The last festival gathered in Polyanitsa more than 500 «walruses» — more than in all previous years combined, which shows that this interesting event, held in the most famous Ukrainian resort, is gaining popularity. Anyone can become a witness or a participant of the Festival of walruses, but to participate in the winter swimming you need to apply in advance to the organizing committee. The youngest participant in 2012 was a 5-year-old resident of Odessa — there are no age restrictions for «walruses».
Visiting this winter holiday of health and longevity, traveling to the fabulous Poljanica and resting at the best resort in Ukraine surrounded by picturesque Carpathian nature will definitely be remembered for many years, especially for those who prefer winter swimming — there is no more interesting and beautiful place for it!
