As an independent institution, the Museum of Local Lore began to function in 1933, when it separated from the Museum of Sanitary Culture organized in 1929. The latter was the first museum-type institution in the city. The museum received the status of a regional museum 8 years after its opening.
For many years the museum grew and developed, and now it has almost 62 thousand museum exhibits presented in numerous funds.
In the archeological collection one can see unique treasures — jewelry of Bolokhov land, which existed in the XII-XIII centuries, as well as household items and tools of ancient settlers of the region. In total, the archaeological collection contains about 6.5 thousand exhibits.
The rich collections of numismatics include 8 hoards of medieval coins, as well as money signs of different historical periods, various domestic and foreign awards. The collection of numismatics has about 9 thousand exhibits.
In the museum you can look at a variety of ancient and modern weapons, admire objects representing Podolsk ceramics and porcelain, see the most beautiful icons. In the museum library you can also find a lot of interesting exhibits, including about 3 thousand unique publications created in the XIX century. In total, the library has more than 20 thousand editions. The literary and memorial museum of Anna Akhmatova is also considered to be a branch of the Museum of Local Lore; it is located in Derazhnyansky district in the village of Slobodka-Shelekhovskaya.
