Belosarayskaya Spit is an ornithological reserve of Azov region. It is a wonderful place for recreation, combining beautiful nature, clean sea and carefully protected sanctuary of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. When the weather is good, Belosarayskaya Spit can appear before travelers in all its glory — it is a unique system of wetlands, which provides a place to live a huge number of rare birds and animals.
The name «Belosarayskaya Spit» comes from the specific houses, which were built by Greeks moving to the Azov region. These houses were of Tatar type, small, covered with white clay outside. In translation from Turkic the spit was known as White Sarai or White City. Later, the words were crossed and the present well-known name came out.
Belosarayskaya Spit recreation can offer a variety, but the most valuable is this place for those travelers who prefer to spend time in pure, beautiful and protected nature. The spit has its own unique climate, thanks to which a large number of different birds come here to nest. Gulls, sandpipers, mallards, swans and other birds nest here. In good weather on Belosarayka you can watch the flights of gulls and mallards, admire the clear sea and explore many small lakes with estuaries, which are part of this landscape reserve. The estuaries are especially beautiful in summer, when the water dries up and they are filled with green grass carpet. By the way, it is on the spit that the largest nesting area of herons in the whole Northern Azov region is located.

Reserve in 1995. The reserve was founded by the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in order to preserve not only the unique ecosystem of the spit, but also to allow many species of animals and birds listed in the Red Book to develop their population. Much earlier, back in the USSR, the spit received the status of «Reserve of State Importance» in 1980, but at that time the protected area was much smaller. There are 217 species of both common and quite rare plants in the reserve. On the spit, extending into the sea for about 14 kilometers, it occupies an area of 616 hectares. The tip of the spit is marked by the Black Sign, which reaches a height of 20 meters. This symbol is made of a mast with horizontal slats and supports, representing a landmark.
The uniqueness of the reserve on Belosarayskaya Spit also lies in Priazovskij-capelnik — only here you can find such a large nesting area of herons, which make their home here every year. The colony of these wading birds is very large and includes such species as white, red and gray herons.
Belosarajskaja kosa, the sea, the protected area — this is all a wonderful choice for all travelers.
Here you can have a good rest and spend summer weekends. There is a place for lovers of untouched nature, and simple travelers, and tourists vacationing at the sea, and those who just went for a picnic. Due to its small territory, the entire spit can be traveled around the area in one day, either by car or by bicycle.
