The mineral waters of Svalyava made this small town, lost among the hills near the Veretsky Pass, famous many centuries ago. Since then, the fame of Svalyava as one of the world’s most popular resorts has not subsided. People who have heard about the healing properties of Svalyava waters come here with pleasure and are convinced that the rumors are not exaggerated at all.
The first mention of the mineral water springs in Svalava was made in a report for King Matyas of Hungary in 1463. However, there is information that the servants of the Byzantine emperor appealed to the Hungarian kings in the XI century with requests for the supply of mineral water from Svalava.
Local residents used the healing waters first for making wine, then as ordinary drinking water. They began to be used for the treatment of various diseases only in the middle of the 18th century, after the springs were visited by Rakoczy Ferenc II in 1709 and their research was carried out in 1755.
Only half a century after the Svaliava waters began to be used for therapeutic purposes, they began to be exported far beyond the borders of Transcarpathia. It is known that the mineral waters of Svalyava were supplied to Lviv and even to Moscow, Vienna and Paris, they were called «the queen of diuretic and dissolving urinary salts healing waters». Svalava waters became even more famous after being recognized as one of the best in taste in 1842 in Budapest and after being awarded a golden diploma in 1855 at the exhibition of European waters held in Paris. Many more times later they were recognized as the best and awarded at the most prestigious exhibitions in Europe.
After the Second World War the bottling of mineral water was resumed in 1946 under the aegis of Luzhansky Mineral Waters Plant Administration, which in 1950 included Svalyava Mineral Waters Plant. And today mineral water «Svalyava» continues to be poured from the well drilled then at a depth of 200 meters on the right bank of the Latorica and sent to many countries, including Canada and the United States.
In total, in the vicinity of Svalyava opened more than 100 sources of mineral water, and this is almost a third of the healing springs of the whole Transcarpathia! On the territory of Svalyava district operates a lot of resorts and sanatoriums, where you can relax and improve your health. Such methods of water treatment as drinking, therapeutic baths, heat therapy, hydrotherapy, mechanotherapy and many others are applied.
By its composition mineral water «Svalyava» is carbonic boron medium mineralized hydrocarbonate sodium, belongs to the Borjomi type. Treatment with this water is recommended for hyperacidity, duodenal and liver diseases, prevention of diathesis, mineral metabolism disorders in the body, metabolic diseases such as obesity, diabetes and many others.
