Altanka

Location: Sumy, Pokrovska pl.

AltankaIn March 2010, the winner of the campaign «Seven Wonders of Sumy» was recognized as an open wooden gazebo Altanka. This elegant architectural structure is located in the heart of the city on Pokrovskaya Square, a favorite place of recreation of Sumy citizens. For many decades, city residents come here to meet with friends, sit on cozy benches in the shade of thick lilacs, and on holidays to listen to music performed by a brass band.

Altanka is clearly kept in the forms of the «Russian style» and belongs to the rarest in the city building direction of architecture — historicism and is an example of small architectural structures. In appearance, it is an octagonal open wooden terrace, located on a high brick plinth and covered with a cross-shaped vaulted roof with a central faceted dome. The structure is ten meters high and almost six meters in diameter, with a flower bed planted around the terrace at the foot. AltankaThe distinctive feature of the Altanka is that it was built without a single metal nail. Decorated with profiled columns, lace cornices, carved roof spires and other decorative elements, it creates the impression of an unusually light openwork structure. In the lace patterns of wooden decorations of Altanka there are pagan symbols of the sun and fertility, dating back to the Tripoli culture. Closely intertwined with them are the symbols of Christianity and the Jewish religion, which together represent world order, harmony and grace.

Currently there are two versions of the authorship and time of construction of Altanka. According to one of them, the gazebo was built on the site of an oil well (no oil was found!) by a Pole I. Leszczynski, husband of the niece of the Sumy sugar producer-mecenate I. Kharitonenko, and named by the Polish word Altanka — a light structure in the park. According to another version, the author of this structure was a draftsman of the city’s zemstvo M.A.Shchavelev. According to his drawings and was built approximately in 1900-1905g.gg. Altanka. And for more than a hundred years it is not only a beautiful architectural structure, but also an amulet, a visiting card attractions of the city of Sumy.
