The village of Rybalche near Kherson looks like the edge of the world. Right behind it the asphalt road ends, and further — only sun-scorched sands of Kinburn spit. But for ships it is, on the contrary, the beginning of a great journey: Rybalche is located in the place where the Dnieper flows into the Black Sea. For more than a century, the way for seafarers here has been indicated by the Adzhigol lighthouse — the tallest of Ukrainian lighthouses.

The graceful openwork construction was built in 1911. The height of the lighthouse is 67 meters. The lighthouse has a second name — Stanislav-Adzhigolsky back. It comes from the names of two capes in the Dnieper estuary — Stanislav and Adzhigol. The mouth of the Dnieper estuary is considered a difficult place for navigation. When flowing into the estuary, the river is an intricate weave of numerous branches, floating islands and narrow channels between them (firths). Autumn fogs also complicate orientation.

The Ajigol Lighthouse is interesting not only as a navigational landmark, but also as an architectural monument. It was built according to the project of the famous scientist Vladimir Shukhov, who entered the history of engineering thanks to steel mesh structures. The roofs of the pavilions of the All-Russian Exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod (1896) and the landing stage of the Kievsky railway station in Moscow (1918) were built according to Shukhov’s designs.

But Shukhov’s towers became the inventor’s calling card. The hyperboloidal shape of these structures allowed for substantial lightweighting. For example, the Eiffel Tower would have weighed three times less if it had been built according to Shukhov’s design. In addition, his method could be used to create a curvilinear structure from rectilinear parts, which on the one hand simplified construction, and on the other — gave the tower strength. The most famous of Shukhov’s towers is the TV and radio tower on Shabolovka in Moscow.

Shukhov's idea for hyperboloidal structures was inspired by an ordinary wicker basket.

Adzhigolsky lighthouse is a kilometer and a half from the shore, and the staff has to get here by boat, and in winter on ice. There is a house built near the lighthouse for the keeper. One can climb to the top of the structure by a spiral staircase located in the central pipe with a diameter of two meters.

There are a lot of legends connected with Kinburn Spit. The most beautiful one is about the tribe of Amazons who lived here. They fought bravely with enemies, and captured men were sacrificed to their gods. Only Heracles himself managed to defeat the female army. As it is not surprising, the legend is based on historical facts. In the Northern Black Sea coast really lived tribes of women warriors, presumably of Scythian origin. In steppe barrows, archaeologists found female skeletons with traces of wounds with cold weapons. The «Father of History» Herodotus in his works tells his version of their appearance: horizon view from the top of the Adzhigolsky lighthouse the captured Amazons were being transported to Greece, but they captured the ship, which later nailed to the Black Sea coast, now belonging to Ukraine.
