Probably not everyone has heard of the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. This place back in the distant 1070-1293 was the capital of what is now known as Sri Lanka. In the modern world, the city serves as the most important center of culture of this state. Located Polonnaruwa is not far from Colombo — just 214 kilometers from it. No one knows when the ancient city was founded. But, judging from the inscriptions on the caves near the former capital, scientists suggest that the first inhabitants settled here in 2st. BC. The time of Polonnaruwa’s birth is also attributed to this period.
The first inhabitants did a lot of work for the life of the city. Thus, they built dams, cleared impassable local forests, gave life to rice farming. In one of the periods of Polonnaruwa’s existence, it served as the center of military garrisons. In those distant times, the city did not have its modern name, but was called as Pulattinagare. It was here that the famous Topa Veva reservoir was created in the sixth century. The initiator of its construction was King Upatissa II. Since ancient times, Sri Lanka has been a place where Buddhism was preached. But, its capital was a haven for Hindu saints. They were greatly honored here. That is why in the modern territory of Polnaruwa there is a huge number of Hindu temples.

Today, the historic city provides interest not only for historians, but also for tourists. Every year thousands of travelers from all over the world come here. And this is not surprising, because the local nature, culture and sights create unique impressions. Those who are fond of the history of the ancient world can safely go to Pollonaruva. The local Archaeological Museum will tell a lot about the past life of the center. The Council of Ministers Building is also a place of extraordinary interest.
