The city of Polonnaruwa is the medieval capital of Sri Lanka.

Probably not everyone has heard of the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. This place back in the distant 1070-1293 was the capital of what is now known as Sri Lanka. In the modern world, the city serves as the most important center of culture of this state. Located Polonnaruwa is not far from Colombo — just 214 kilometers from it. It was here that the famous Topa Veva reservoir was created in the sixth century. The initiator of its construction was King Upatissa II. Since ancient times, Sri Lanka has been a place where Buddhism was preached. But, its capital was a haven for Hindu saints. They were greatly honored here.
