The largest park in the capital of Hungary wants to be talked about quietly and with a gasp. No, there is no need for silence here, no excessive demands for behavior, just the history of Varoszliget Park has very deep roots, out of respect for which you want to lower your voice a little.
Let’s shake the dust off the pages of a century of history….
King Matyas would have been surprised to see today’s territory of once swampy hunting grounds with scant vegetation. Leopold I decided that this was the right place for pastures. Maria Theresa, on the other hand, took a purely feminine, practical approach to her domain and in 1799 ordered the marshes to be drained and trees to be selected to grow here. The elaborate system of canals was the source of the idea to create artificial lakes.
For the 1000th anniversary of Hungary, the majestic Vajdahunyad Castle, designed by the architect Ignác Alpár, was erected in the park. In 1896 it was only a wooden structure for decoration purposes, but in 1904 the castle was clad in eternal stone.
The attractive modernity of Budapest’s central park
After the cars on Europe’s first underground railroad were launched on the eve of the 20th century, the park actually began a new round of development. One after another, facilities began to appear, which gave residents the opportunity for cultural relaxation, aesthetic pleasure, entertainment and active leisure.
At any time of the year the park is beautiful! Organized excursions in Budapest do not pass without visiting the charming heart of the capital. If you are going for a walk in the park, be sure to take your camera to discover your own vision of the most marvelous places!
The amazing number of trees — 7 thousand is still quite a number! — is the result of painstaking work over several centuries. The built zoo fits perfectly into its surroundings, completing the complete natural connection of flora and fauna.
Among the entertainments are the famous Luna Park, a magnificent circus, visiting which incredibly attracts little travelers from all over the world, including residents of the capital. The Museum of Transportation, the Szechenyi Bath, the architectural complex are the most interesting objects of the park zone. On a 1 square kilometer plot of land there are small artificial lakes with ducks and swans.
With a rest in the restaurant «Gundel», which is more than one and a half centuries old, it will be possible to put an end to your acquaintance with Varoshliget. But only this time! The next visit to the central city park will be a fresh start!
