St. Victor Abbey in Marseille: monks, cardinal and music

For those who will be traveling to France, we recommend planning a visit to Marseille to visit a completely different era, which is preserved and continues to reign in the Abbey of Saint-Victor.

For those who have to travel to France, it is a good idea to plan a visit to Marseille. This can be done if only to visit a completely different era, which is preserved and continues to reign in the Abbey of St. Victor. Under the vaults, which keep the resounding footsteps of the cardinal, meek and almost inaudible — of the nuns, confident — of the monks, hover once hidden secrets under the supervision of the measured current of time….

When looking at the walls of the abbey first comes the thought of a powerful fortress-protector for the monks who lived there. The lack of external decorative elements only reinforces the medieval spirit present here. And the surrounding civilization in the form of modern buildings, well-maintained streets, a huge number of cars does not at all interfere with the enveloping awe before entering the space that preserves the memory of centuries. For a more convenient way to get around the city, renting a car is available at www.eavtoprokat.ru, allowing you to drive seamlessly up to St. Victor to begin exploring the area.

The puzzles of history were put together gradually…

.

The founder of the monastery is the Venerable John Cassian, who conceived in the 5th century the idea of building a monastic monastery near the burial place of those who accepted death for the faith of Jesus Christ. Among the dead was Victor of Marseilles, whose holy name the abbey bears.

Initially there were built two monasteries — male and female. In VIII century. buildings were destroyed. The male monastery was to be restored, but the female monastery was never rebuilt. To this day, the French are grateful to the monk Wilfred from England for undertaking to rebuild the abbey and become its abbot. This happened around the XI century.

Of all the abbots who served at St. Victor, the most famous is Mazarini, an intriguing figure in the minds of contemporaries. During the reign of King Louis XIV, Mazarini was a cardinal.

The year 1739 was the year of the dissolution of the abbey, the order for which was signed by Pope Clement XII.

Yes, interestingly the pieces of history have come together…..

Some features

.

The Abbey’s watchtowers are in the classic shape of defensive cairns — squares that conceal loopholes. One of the towers houses a bell tower. Inside the church, incredibly similar to the fortification, there is still an organ, the marvelous sounds of which serve as a delight for listeners. It is for them that the musicians often organize classical concerts. The incredibly high vaulted ceilings create the feeling of being in a musical universe — the acoustics here are amazing!

In 1840, Saint-Victor became one of the historical monuments that represent France.

Today you can take a tour of the famous monastery, feel the presence of Her Majesty History within the high stone walls, visit the rooms with sarcophagi, with the Black Madonna, with huge tables, torches in niches.
